What Is A Palate Expander?

Palate expanders are devices used to expand the upper jaw to enable other teeth to grow well and fill-in properly. This way, we simply take advantage of the natural teeth growth to correct any dental or oral issues.

A palate expander is usually referred for a child when the upper jaw is not in perfect alignment (more narrower) with the lower jaw. If left unfixed,  your child will develop a bite problem as he or she gets older. This problem usually manifests in the form of a posterior crossbite or severe crowding. Crossbites are a wrong type of bite that needs to be corrected as early as possible in a child’s life.

In this article, we hope to put to rest all possible questions you may have about the use of palatal expanders for kids and teens. There are legitimate reasons to start your child’s orthodontic treatment early, and we’re available to help you make the right decision for your child.
